Expressive individualism has long been the dominant idiom in elite culture. It seems like we are seeing a shift now in the Trump era where a cosmopolitan or “post-American” view of our country will become more and more central to elite culture. I lost track of how many ads last night explicitly or implicitly celebrated a borderless, unified world. This is a key front in the new culture war.
