A dozen years ago, when my old adversary Lynne Stewart was herself prosecuted for providing material support to terrorism — by helping her infamous client, the “Blind Sheikh” (Omar Abdel Rahman), to communicate with his Egyptian jihadist organization — I tried to explain (or was it therapy? Maybe I should say I tried to understand) my complicated relationship with her. Here is that reflection. I couldn’t help but like her … despite despising what she represented.
The Blind Sheikh died about two weeks ago ago while serving his life sentence. Lynne Stewart died yesterday, three years after compasionate release from her sentence.
