Pro-Tip

by Charles C. W. Cooke

A tip for progressives who want to recruit Republicans to their side, be it to stage an investigation into the Trump administration, to oppose the less popular parts of his agenda, or even to impeach him: Perhaps don’t follow up the righteous talk of “country over party” by insisting that all Republicans are the same, that “Pence is actually worse,” and that even those who criticized Trump during the last election are “complicit.” If things get bad enough, there’s some potential for a coalition of the worried. But no such thing will come to fruition if “this man is a unique problem and we need your help” is so quickly followed by “and this is your fault, your views on taxes are the real issue, and we’re going to destroy your movement.”
