Dire Future

Nicholas Eberstadt’s article on Eurasian AIDS shows that, in even the most conservative estimates, within the next 25 years, in Russia, China, and India alone, another 66 million people could contract HIV, more than the total number of AIDS victims up to now. And these are conservative estimates. The high end estimates are almost inconceivable, running close to 260 million in China, Russia, and India alone. Over and above the catastrophic loss of human life, Eberstadt warns that the spreading epidemic could have serious economic and military consequences–-perhaps gutting the Russian economy, and turning the country into a third rate power and social basket case.
