“Riordan Would Have Won”


That’s what Andrew Sullivan thinks. At least Sullivan doesn’t fall for the trap of invoking the polls that show that California voters would have preferred him. Those polls certainly don’t prove anything about what California voters would have thought about Riordan after an actual general-election campaign. The fact that Simon ran a flawed campaign has made some people forget about the poor political judgment and campaigning skills that Riordan demonstrated in his primary campaign. I suspect that Riordan would not have won, although a case can be made that Bill Jones might have been able to pull it off.
