The U.S. Catholic bishops have overwhelmingly approved the revised sex-abuse policy. There were six abstentions and one “no” vote. It came from Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger of Evansville, IN, who objected to the provision forbidding bishops from reinstating a one-time offender who had been, in the bishop’s judgment, rehabilitated. “I think we have lost that discretionary authority,” replied Cardinal Francis George, wisely. Gettelfinger’s name surfaced nationally earlier this year when it was revealed that he had allowed a priest caught in 1995 with scads of hard-core kiddie porn to remain in parish ministry. This is the kind of thing Cardinal George is talking about.
