Tom Delay’s Graciousness

He made a very nice comment about Ohio’s Deborah Pryce, who has just made history by being elected Chairman of the House GOP Conference. Here’s what DeLay said, as quoted by the Hotline: “Republicans never do anything by quotas, we do everything by merit, and obviously it is just added sweetness that a kind face and a very articulate woman can handle the job.”DeLay’s comments are deeply satisfying to anyone who is revolted by race and gender tokenism, because they declare that Pryce-who is now the highest-ranking woman in the history of the House GOP-was elevated not because of her gender but because of her talents and the content of her character. This is a tribute to Deborah Pryce-and to Tom DeLay himself.
