Horse-Eating Surrender Monkeys

Jay Nordlinger in today’s Impromptus: “I wouldn’t pronounce _hors d’oeuvres_
in the French fashion.” You wouldn’t, Jay? How in tarnation WOULD you
pronounce it, then? “Horse doovers”? I have never heard anything but “or
derv,” even from the least pretentious people I know. And pronouncing that
first “s”–well, you do know what they do with horses in France, don’t
you? [See, Jay, this is the downside to my reading right to the end of
all your pieces.]
