War Debt

Daniel Drezner says that pro-war commentators are wrong to suggest that France and Germany should be with us because of what we did for them during World War II (and the fifty years thereafter). He’s right. The state is a cold monster, after all. I would note only that Europeans (and left-wing Americans) should consider the record of the United States during the last century before charging that we are self-interested, bullying, dangerous, or a malign influence on the world.
