Secret Plan Redux

From a reader:

This whole “secret plan” dispute with Josh Marshall reminds of the 80’s when everyone was “shocked” to find out that Reagan liked the Contras. Sure there were legitimate questions about Ollie North’s funding mechanism, but I remember asking at the time how anyone could possibly pretend to be surprised that Reagan was in favor of supporting anti-communist guerrillas in general and the Contras in particular.

This is Iran-Contra all over again only without any of the objectionable aspects.

1. Instead of passing Boland amendments Congress voted to support the President.
2. Instead of raising money by selling arms to Iran the administration used the defense budget and a supplemental appropriation.
3. We used the US military instead of just supporting the Kurds.
