droit de seigneur, her mother having been a servant in the Thurmond
household. The ethos of the time was captured in an old English song:

“It’s the same the ‘ole world over

It’s the poor wot gets the blame.

And the rich wot gets the pleasure–

Ain’t it all a bloomin’ shame!”
