MOTOR VOTER

A lot of people are upset at the increased price of gasoline. It's an election year. So where's the bill to cut gas taxes? For Republicans, raising the issue might be a nice way to highlight what Al Gore's environmental agenda really means.
BACK TO FORM

John McCain's brief flirtation with opposition to bilingual education seems to be over. A press release from the campaign yesterday declared: "McCain has a long history of working with the Hispanic community. Reputable national Hispanic organizations such as the National Council of
La Raza, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the National Association of Bilingual Education have recognized McCain with awards." All three are left-wing groups opposed to teaching English immersion in
the classroom. These words, incidentally, are contained within a statement announcing McCain's new Spanish-language website. People who have gone through the ruinous bilingual-education programs McCain has supported during his career can now keep up with his campaign.
SO CHRISTIE, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO BE INCLUSIVE?

An interesting tidbit from John Zogby's two-month "Culture Poll" survey: 60.8 percent of Hispanic Americans would ban abortions except in cases where the mother's life is in danger.
POOR TIMING

Several thousand protestors descended on Tallahassee today to complain about Gov. Jeb Bush's "One Florida" plan revising the state's affirmative action policies. The demonstrators, whose ranks included rent-a-marchers
Jesse Jackson and Patricia Ireland, wanted their assembly to coincide with Bush's state of the state speech (which went off without a hitch). But that means they're competing for coverage with an already-scheduled news
event, rather than dominating attention on a slower day. To make matters worse, it's Super Tuesday. There are almost no national reporters in Tallahassee. On any other day, a big civil-rights protest against the brother of the GOP frontrunner would be a media circus three rings
under a crowded big top. Instead, it's more like a puppet show before a small audience. "One Florida" hasn't exactly been a public-relations success for Bush the Left hates it and conservatives have been cool toward it but Bush's foes have missed a major opportunity to land
another blow.
