This was just a few minutes before the Democrats had a real-life actor, Tommy Lee Jones, come on stage to discuss the subject of Al Gore. But Lieberman's point about the Republicans turning their political convention into a scripted masquerade was right on target and it wouldn't be any less true if he had made the charge about his own party. There's been no drama in Los Angeles. Take Gore's "surprise" appearance on stage for a hug and a wave after Jones nominated him and his daughter Karenna seconded it. At last, the real Al! How spontaneous! How authentic! How saccharine. There's an important lesson here for campaign-finance reformers. If you like this stuff the propaganda bio films, the triumph of celebrities over legislators, the long testimonials about how great a dad the candidate is then keep pushing ahead. Free airtime for the parties simply will guarantee more of it, ad nauseam.
