Fight of the Century
There is no truth to the rumor that the White House has sold pay-per-view rights to President Clinton's closed-circuit grand jury testimony as a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

All Apologies
Whatever Bill Clinton says tonight, we can be sure that any apologies won't go nearly far enough. It's not just that he isn't going to admit to subornation of perjury or obstruction of justice, and may not even come completely clean about his "relationship" with Monica Lewinsky.

Nor is it Hillary Rodham Clinton who most deserves an apology. This bright and capable woman must surely have known the truth for months. She is not Clinton's victim so much as his accomplice. Together they have betrayed the public trust, and both of them should apologize.

Clinton should also permit the full transcript of his grand jury testimony to be released to the public immediately. No five-minute speech can even begin to approach the total disclosure Clinton owes us; indeed, that speech should be checked against what he said under oath.

We also need an apology for the last seven months. Will the President apologize to the Cabinet members he trooped over to the White House right after the scandal broke? Madeleine Albright et al declared that they believed Clinton's denial of a sexual relationship with Lewinsky. So did Ann Lewis and Mike McCurry, Paul Begala and James Carville. Now Clinton has made fools of them all. If they were morally serious people, those of them in his employ would resign. But then, come to think of it, so would Clinton.

Question Time
Why is Orrin Hatch the Republican most willing to forgive a sexual predator and liar? Perhaps he should study the example of John Ashcroft, who has been treating the news with the gravity it deserves rather than the poll-driven faux gravity Hatch puts on for these occasions.
