Do-Something Congress?
The week of September 8th may be a busy one for Republicans returning to Washington. With Monica Lewinksy's grand jury testimony apparently complete, Ken Starr has every reason to finish his report and send it to the Hill with all deliberate speed. (It's unclear whether he'll try to subpoena President Clinton, who was allegedly less-than-forthcoming in Monday's showdown with Starr; if he doesn't, the week after Labor Day looks like a reasonable due date.)

In addition, the House GOP appears committed to citing Attorney General Janet Reno for contempt for refusing to comply with a committee subpoena for Charles La Bella's memorandum recommending an independent counsel. New information on Gore's questionable fundraising practices makes the case against him even more compelling, and puts Reno into an even tighter corner. Reno's expected ploy to launch a 90-day inquiry into whether an independent counsel is needed--another delaying tactic--doesn't appear to be winning any plaudits.

Model Year 74
The New York Post reports that Vice President Gore stopped in Colorado to visit Gerald Ford on the way to his Hawaiian vacation, according to Ford's neighbors. A spokeswoman for Gore denies it. Wonder what they talked about.
