Not-So-Great Expectations
When it comes to Congressional elections, the Democrats can't get their
story straight. In May, Rep. Martin Frost (Texas), head of the
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, predicted that voters will
"usher in a New Democratic Majority" on November 3. In July, a DCCC
release said, "we believe we are in striking distance to win back the
House." In August, a DCCC aide told the Christian Science Monitor, "We
have about a 50-50 chance" of regaining control of the House. In
September, Democratic National Committee chairman Roy Romer claimed that
"Anything short of [losing 35 seats] would be a success" for the
Democrats this year. Last week, DNC political director Jill Alper told
the New York Times "Losing less than 26 House seats and losing less than
six Senate seats is a huge victory for this party."
Reboot
President Clinton, on new White House Chief of Staff John Podesta,
October 20: "With the singular exception of the Vice President, he is
the most technologically proficient of our administration, guiding our
technology policy on many fronts."
Associated Press story on Al Gore's visit to Pittsburgh factory,
September 4: "Gore smiled and admitted that he, too, has trouble turning
on a computer, let alone using one."
