VOX POPULI
Vice President Al Gore on Monday criticized Republicans who favor impeachment. "It is not in keeping with the wishes of the American people. It is not following the wisdom of the American people," he said. White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart also referred to Clinton's apparent support in the polls: "There is a small group of the Republican leadership who have made it their mission in life to remove the President ... certainly against the will of the American public."

A White House that lives by the polls deserves to die by them. Although it is true that 61 per cent of Americans oppose Clinton's impeachment, according to the Washington Post/ABC News poll released on Tuesday, the White House soon may find that the "wisdom of the American people" is not necessarily a steadfast friend. The same survey also reveals that 58 per cent of the public thinks Clinton should resign from office if the full House impeaches him. How wise is that?

Probably not wise enough for President Clinton. On Sunday in Israel, he responded to a question about resignation: "It's never crossed my mind." It's the truest thing he ever said.

CONNIE JOB
The New York Times on Tuesday identified Rep. Connie Morella (R., Md.) in a photo caption as a "Democrat of Maryland." Maybe the editors know something we don't.

NO THEFT
By being pro-impeachment, the Republicans have finally found an issue that Democrats won't steal.
