Should a candidate’s children, age, and capabilities factor into whether we should vote for him or her?

Amy Julia Becker, a mother of a child with Down’s Syndrome, admits she had mixed feelings when Sarah Palin emerged on the national scene with Trig on her hip.

Did Governor Palin have any business running for such a high office? Or, for that matter, what about Rick Santorum who has a daughter with developmental delays due to a rare chromosomal disorder? Even President Obama had two young daughters when he ran for office. Is there anything wrong with that?

Amy Julia concludes that these candidates have all modeled family lives that include sacrifice alongside the simple joys and heartaches of being a parent. Plus, their circumstances provide interesting opportunities for conversations about family. Do you agree?
