I first realized that “pro choice” is often really “pro abortion” back in the 1980s. I was a fill in talk show host on KGIL Radio in LA. The star of the station was very supportive of abortion rights, often discussing the issue.
I was asked to fill in one day, and decided to do an hour on adoption as “another choice” for women facing an unwanted pregnancy. I brought in an adopting parent, a woman who gave up her child for adoption, and an attorney specializing in the field.
Fast forward to today: Breitbart reports that a pro abortion campaign has been launched by NARAL and others. From the story:
On Monday, pro-abortion groups across the country launched an organized effort to feature women telling uplifting stories of their abortions. The so-called “1 in 3” week of action will feature 100 events in 32 states, and began in Washington D.C. According to the Advocates for Youth, one in three women in the United States will at some point have an abortion…
The “1 in 3” organizers will also be handing out a book: 1 in 3: These Are Our Stories. Tellingly, organizers suggest that their goal is to keep abortion “safe, legal, and affordable” – a marked change from the old pro-choice slogan from the Clinton years, “safe, legal, and rare.” The organizers also want to “end the stigma” surrounding abortion.
Abortion should never be applauded. Public–and more powerfully, the caring but firm disapproval of friends and intimates–can save lives.
How about we look at abortion culturally as we do smoking cigarettes? It may be legal–but you really shouldn’t.
