On Sept. 4, Kerry issued this statement:

“Teresa and I are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths and injuries of so many young schoolchildren, their families and teachers at Middle School No. 1 in Beslan, North Ossetia. Our prayers and sympathy are with the people of Russia in these days of immense grief.

“The tragedy in Beslan follows a horrific series of terrorist attacks in Russia. Americans stand united with the people of Russia against terrorism and share the Russian people’s grief and mourning at these senseless deaths.”

Beyond this statement, it appears John Kerry hasn't said anything about the Beslan school massacre. He didn't mention it in his speech in West Virginia, and he didn't mention it in his radio address (although, in fairness to Kerry, news of the massacre may have broken after he recorded the radio address).

Thought one: Kerry needs to read Mark Steyn on how "sadness isn't enough."

Thought two: Couldn't this happen here in America, if al-Qaeda got a bunch of jihadi maniacs, guns, and some homemade explosives? Doesn't John Kerry have anything to say about preventing this nightmare scenario?

Thought three: Is it unfair to say John Kerry is ignoring the most troubling terrorist attack since the Madrid bombings?

UPDATE: Contrast, Bush, Sept. 4, during a campaign speech in Broadview Heights, Ohio:

Before I begin, before I talk about issues that are on your mind, I do want to talk about something that's on my mind and I know on your mind, as well. Today on our TV screens, last night on our TV screens, we saw the horror of terror in Russia. And I can just imagine the heartfelt anguish of the moms and dads of those Russian kids. Our prayers are with those families. And yesterday is a grim reminder of the nature of the terrorists we face. That is why this country must be strong and diligent, never yielding. We must bring them to justice before they harm us. (Applause.)
