DID DAN RATHER REALLY 'STAND UP FOR HIS TROOPS'?
Daniel Schorr, writing in the Christian Science Monitor, salutes Dan Rather:
Dan Rather, who had previously announced his retirement in March, was faulted for over-enthusiasm in defending a report that turned out to have been based on forged documents.
However badly it turned out, I commend Mr. Rather's reflex of standing up for the troops as an initial response.
If only "getting the facts right" was as strong a reflex as "defend your troops."
By the way, notice Dan Rather stood up for his producer and everyone around him... until the axe started swinging. Now he's stepping down to become a correspondent in March, while four of the people around him are looking for work.
