RICHARD HOLBROOKE CAN WRITE A GOOD COLUMN. WHO KNEW?

Longtime readers of this site will recall that one of the first posts recalled Michael Kelly’s mockery of longtime Clinton official Richard Holbrooke.

Now Holbrooke is writing a monthly column for the Washington Post, and surprisingly and perhaps frustratingly, it’s a pretty good insider-y look at the new faces around Condi Rice at the U.S. State Department. Holbrooke likes them, so some conservatives’ first instinct might be to fear they’re the wrong men for the job.

But this early praise might be an important inoculation. If these new faces — veteran diplomats and foreign policy gurus — begin enforcing Bush’s policies more effectively than their predecessors, then it will torpedo the claim that Bush’s ideas only appeal to a secretive bunch of sinister 'neocons' and ideologues.
