NEW YORK –- After challenging Glenn Beck to a debate over the weekend at Netroots Nation and in a MoveOn.org sponsored ad onMonday, Van Jones may have taken his beef with Beck a step further.
Jones, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress who resigned from his job as White House “green jobs” czar following the conservative host’s repeated claims that he was a subversive and a Communist, is considering legal action against Beck-employer Fox News.
Jones’ attorney sent a cease and desist Monday to Dianne Brandi, the network’s executive vice president for legal & business affairs, claiming that “a series of sensational and inflammatory charges” have been made against Jones on Fox News shows. The statements, his attorney Joseph Sandler argues, are “demonstrably, unequivocally and absolutely false.”
Uh, didn’t Jones just challenge Glenn Beck to a debate a few days ago? Here he is discussing the matter with Ed Schultz last night:
I don't know where Van Jones' lawyer went to law school, but there is no law that protects public figures from "sensational and inflammatory charges," a legal reality Sarah Palin's lawyers will confirm. Van Jones resigned from the Obama administration in response to those charges, so it's a little late to cry foul. In addition, a cease and desist letter makes him look pathetically weak and thin-skinned for a guy who aggressively attacks those with whom he disagrees.
Van Jones signed his name to the 9/11 Truther Petition that accuses George Bush and others in his administration of conspiring to attack the U.S. on 9/11. Most people would consider that a sensational and incendiary charge, as well as an unproven one, but the First Amendment protects Mr. Jones and other Truthers from lawsuits like the one he threatens against Glenn Beck. Mr. Jones apparently can dish it out, but can't take it.
Well you could also be talking about Sarah Palin. Her lawyers sent basically the same thing to all news outlets in 2009 when rumors of her resigning from office first surfaced. Only difference? Those rumors were proven true!
Oh and what incendiary things has Palin said about Obama and about any other Democrat, as well as media personalities?
I guess Mrs. Palin can dish it out, but can't take it as well.
Uh, wrong. The letters were sent regarding asserting that she was resigning because of pending legal charges against her, which was proven to be false. Moreover, how did this story turn into one about Palin? Geez, go back to reading DailyKos.
The exact way Beck was making assertions about Van Jones. And when Sarah Palin did that, like with Van Jones, I supported the move. Why? Because our news needs to go back to covering NEWS, not gossip, speculation or playing the name calling game.
Of course I can tell you don't believe in that by your "go back to reading DailyKos" comment. Sorry to tread on your holy ground here and make you have to listen to alternative views. I'm sure Fox will help drowned those out for ya!
Egad - the acceptance of diverse views is one thing, the willy nilly adoption of the spelling standards of our exemplary public schools is another.
Maybe the daily cause ... oops Kos ... will keep us all so much better informed, that rather than drowning out opinion we can learn to peacefully look at discourse from the right, or the left ... and then "by their fruits" we will know as adults whether the respective logic has any merit?
Do you have any opinion about Van Jones versus Glenn Beck or do you view every debate as an opportunity to remind us that you don't like Sarah Palin? As for your comment about Sarah Palin not being able to take it, that's just silly talk. She's taken more abuse than just about any other politician you can name. And what did she do to deserve all that abuse? Is she a communist, a Marxist or a 9/11 Truther? No. She was a conservative Governor from Alaska who accepted John McCain's invitation to share the GOP ticket with him in 2008. What a scandal!
P.S. Sarah Palin disagrees with President Obama, as she has the right to do, but has never threatened to sue him.
Why is it that Van Jones signs a petition calling for a 9/11 investigation and that makes him a subversive yet conservatives such as Andrew Napolitano go on truther king Alex Jones' show to talk about 9/11 and JFK and he's still a great patriot?
I've seen the Beck segments. He basically shows clips of Vann Jones and then questions how such a radical could have gotten a White House appointment (silly question, I know).
The most 'inflammmatory' thing Beck does is to simply broadcast clips of Vann Jones, the 'inflammatory' words just pour out of Jones' own mouth. He could, I suppose, try to sue himself for defamation of character - he'd get about as far as he will with this cease and desist letter.
Rather pointless anyway, isn't Beck off of Fox at the end of the month?
