As Congress gets back to D.C. and starts its investigations into what went wrong, they should take a look at the various committees whose job it is to provide oversight of the very institutions that failed in the run-up to the Christmas day attack.
For example, Silvestre Reyes, “the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the primary committee in the U.S. House of Representatives charged with the oversight of the United States Intelligence Community, including the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and other executive branch departments and agencies,” didn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shia Muslims when he was appointed to this position by Nancy Pelosi in 2006. Heckuva job, Nancy.
And where were the Republicans on any intelligence-sharing problems prior to Christmas Day?
Fannie and Freddie? Not Congress’s fault. Mortgage fraud? Nope. TSA’s nonsensical screening procedures? Not us.
Maybe the slogan for 2010 should be, “It’s the oversight, stupid.”
