Good financial news in the New York Times is rare these days; good financial news about the New York Times is a real surprise:

The New York Times Co. shares soared Thursday morning after the company released third-quarter results that beat Wall Street estimates. … while print-ad trends have improved only “modestly,” Times is seeing significant improvement in digital advertising.

This highlights one of thorniest issues facing the company and other media outfits: Should consumers be forced to pay for Internet content or continue, with some exceptions, to get it for free?
