The Church of 60 Minutes?


PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley honored longtime CBS producer Don Hewitt on Wednesday night by replaying an old interview in which Hewitt suggested he was working in “holier-than-thou television” at CBS:

At that point, the documentaries were sort of — they were like holier-than-thou television. People watched documentaries for the same reason they went to church, because they thought they had to, and it changed television in such a way that 60 Minutes made a profit of $3.2 million — billion.

Actually, Hewitt may have been saying that documentaries used to be stuffy and educational, until Hewitt made them quicker and snappier. If 60 Minutes resembled a church in any way, could they convince atheistic Andy Rooney to hang around?
