I’m in a Twitter war of sorts (scroll down to yesterday at about 8 p.m.) with the Think Progress Twitter account over this story of theirs about a six-year-old girl from El Salvador — without her parents or any guardian — discovered in a van of adult illegal immigrants in Arizona:
Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Arrests 6-Year-Old Undocumented Immigrant
Here’s what they wrote:
Joe Arpaio, the controversial Arizona Sheriff from Maricaopa County, arrested a 6-year-old undocumented immigrant on Friday. The move came the same day President Obama announced a new policy halting deportations for young undocumented immigrants.
The Arizona Republic has the story:
The girl was with 15 other people believed to be in the country illegally who were traveling to the Midwest and northeast United States, said Chris Hegstrom, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
“She’s been turned over to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to try to determine where she’s from. She told us she’s from El Salvador. That’s what she told us,” he said.
The arrest took place Friday night at an undisclosed location in northern Maricopa County…
The sheriff said his deputies arresting child suspected of being an illegal immigrant the same day Obama implemented the policy is a coincidence. But if more illegal children enter the country after hearing about the new policy, Arpaio said it may not be by happenstance.
“Are we going to get more of these situations where illegals feel like now they’re going to be safe? I don’t know,” he said.
I proposed an alternative headline to Think Progress, which they didn’t like:
Alt headline for @thinkprogress: 6yo girl rescued from human trafficking operation cc @jamestaranto
I guess it depends how you define “arrest,” but in terms of what happened to this little girl, she was certainly not treated the same as the adult illegal immigrants who were captured — a fact I made clear through multiple news stories that Think Progress ignored while hyping their sensationalist headline that the six-year-old was arrested. Sheriff’s Deputies discovered the illegal immigrants; took them into custody; most were sent to jail while the girl and three others were handed over to ICE. What exactly does Think Progress and their ilk on the Left who ran with the “arrested” story have the deputies do with the girl?
Well, since Think Progress is quoting from the Arizona Republic to defend their idiotic piece, maybe they’ll correct it now that the same Arizona Republic has posted this:
A 6-year-old girl and three adults were turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials Friday after Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies discovered 16 undocumented immigrants being smuggled in a van in the northern part of the county, officials said.
The other 12 undocumented immigrants were booked into a Maricopa County jail, said Christopher Hegstrom, a spokesman for the MCSO.
Federal immigration officials took over custody of the girl, who was from El Salvador.
“ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations worked closely over the weekend with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement to provide for the timely and safe transfer of an unaccompanied juvenile girl who was part of a human smuggling load encountered Friday by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office,” said Amber Cargile, a spokeswoman for ICE.
She wasn’t arrested. She was rescued.
