Uzbek journalist sentenced to 10 years in prison

A court in the western Uzbek city of Nukus has sentenced Uzbek journalist Salijon Abdurahmonov to 10 years in prison for what are almost certainly trumped-up drugs charges. He had worked for the U.S. government-financed Radio Free Europe.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) are among the groups to condemn the case as yet another attempt to silence critics of the Uzbek government.
