Jonah’s G-File today prompted me to check the NY Times archives to see how Pearl Harbor, 6 year after the attack, was covered compared to today’s 9/11 remembrances.
There were some surprises. When you search “Pearl Harbor” on the dates December 7-8, 1947, there are only 20 hits. This article on how President Truman spent the day was the most shocking. An excerpt (Times Select required):
KEY WEST, Fla., Dec. 7 — President Truman wound up a five-day vacation today, rested and refreshed for his return to the Capital tomorrow.
His chief activity today was to attend divine services in the non-denominational chapel of the naval submarine base here where he has his “little White House.”
Neither the chaplain nor other Navy personnel here took note of the fact that today was the sixth anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The President at a naval base chapel, and Pearl Harbor isn’t even mentioned? I would never have believed that.
