How Caricatures Become News

John J. Miller’s Corner post on the NYT’s story about the defeat of a Vietnam trade bill highlights a great example of how reporters slip caricatures of conservatives into news articles. In this case, the caricature of the conservative who still regards Vietnam as “the enemy” serves a dual purpose: to portray conservatives as irrationally hostile and to shift the blame for the bill’s defeat away from protectionist Dems.
