As the end of the Hong Kong WTO ministerial rapidly approaches, the media center has gone crazy with rumors. First, AP reported that India’s trade minister said a sweeping deal had been reached in the overnight discussions, including a deal on agriculture. Then Reuters issued a report that an EU spokesman had denied that any such deal had been reached. Now, Forbes is reporting that negotiators are close to a deal, but Brazil is holding up the talks by refusing to agree to 2013 as a deadline for the elimination of agricultural export subsidies. Brazil wants the originally proposed deadline of 2010.
My feeling is that we won’t know for sure for a few more hours. But if you’re still awake (it’s past midnight in the states as I write this), keep following the Media Blog for updates.
