The Times Report Lacked Vital Context


The New York Times, in future reports on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, should provide more context. Reporter Stephen Labaton allows a Democrat to accuse Republicans of gutting funding for public broadcasting, without noting that the federal government only provides 15.5 percent of that funding. He also quotes the following letter from the Iowa Public Broadcasting Board, without challenging its accuracy:

We are concerned that the historical and critically important role of CPB as a shield between programming and a political process that seeks to influence it is being compromised — in perception by reports of broad involvement in program content, or in fact by what we understand is a desire to appoint a partisan political activist to the currently vacant post of CPB president.
