The Times Report Lacked Vital Context

Text

The New York Times, in future reports on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, should provide more context. Reporter Stephen Labaton allows a Democrat to accuse Republicans of gutting funding for public broadcasting, without noting that the federal government only provides 15.5 percent of that funding. He also quotes the following letter from the Iowa Public Broadcasting Board, without challenging its accuracy:

We are concerned that the historical and critically important role of CPB as a shield between programming and a political process that seeks to influence it is being compromised — in perception by reports of broad involvement in program content, or in fact by what we understand is a desire to appoint a partisan political activist to the currently vacant post of CPB president.

Perspective from China

An e-mailer in China had the following thoughts on our skeptical journalists:

I was speaking with Australian friends a few years ago, and they were criticizing the United States. I reminded them that in virtually every country you can check into a hotel and watch CNN reporting about the U.S. criticizing the U.S. Even in countries where such criticisms of their own governments are discouraged, censored, or downright illegal

Associated Press reporter David Crary has written an overview of the use of anonymous sources in the newspaper industry. The survey, conducted by the AP Managing Editors, found that not many allow anonymous sourcing at all. The big-city papers are the exception, which is more understandable. But even at some big-city papers like the Philadelphia Inquirer the practice is

E-mailer Russ McSwain wrote in to add something to the Franken discussion:

When Franken was embedded with lead cavalry units during the initial Iraq invasion he was American and pro-American in spite of himself. He described the firm resolve of the unit as it prepared to repel an Iraqi counter attack. Of course some of this could be Stockholm syndrome, [but] on balance Franken gave the appearance of being proud of the American Army.
This brings to mind something Franken said in our interview, discussing his embedding:
At one point, [commanding officer] John Mills looked at a group of reporters–we were all standing around–and he said,
