Senator Mel Martinez delayed confirmation of C. Boyden Gray as U.S. ambassador to the E.U. Why? Apparently for the most petty of reasons: political payback. According to this Novak column, Martinez is seeking to get back at Gray for withdrawing support from Martinez’s Senate campaign. The only problem is, Senator Martinez’s petulance didn’t harm Gray — who hardly needs the job — but the U.S., which could truly use effective representation at the E.U. right now. Apparently Martinez eventually lifted the hold, but now Senator Ken Salazar is blocking Gray — because of his leadership of the Committee for Justice, and the CFJ’s ads defending BIll Pryor.
