Nicolas Sarkozy spoke far too harshly to those rioters. And the French should not have sent so many police into the affected areas, nor declared a state of emergency. The idea of beefing up a police presence for the future is clearly not the way to go. Warning that the same thing could happen here is unnecessary. So says the Prime Minister of Sweden, Goran Persson.
Clearly, Europeans have learned much from the unfolding events in France. Persson did leave one thing out, though. He forgot to put in a plug for more affirmative action.
