1) If Sen. Jim Bunning (R) bows out of his re-election bid this month, as nearly everyone in Kentucky expects at this point, Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R) will likely have his blessing to run. But Dr. Rand Paul (R), an opthamologist and taxpayer activist in Kentucky for 15 years and the son of Rep. Ron Paul (R, Tex.), wants to get into the primary.
Paul, who is more marketable but politically similar to his dad, has never held elected office. Most people would write him off under normal circumstances, but not if he can build on his his father’s presidential effort, which raised $34 million last year, most of it in small amounts over the Internet.
2) Manchester, N.H. Mayor Frank Guinta (R) will be making “a formal announcement regarding his future political plans” next Monday. My money says he’s running for Congress against Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D). That would be a very good recruit for the GOP against a weak incumbent.
