Eric Holder and Ken Salazar have sent letters to Sens. Reid andMcConnell, expressing the Obama administration’s “strong support” for the Akaka bill.
No surprise here, since (a) the bill is entirely consistentwith the administration’s decidedly un-colorblind approach to civil rights, and (b) Senator Obama supported the bill when he was in Congress.
Still, the letters are surprising, in that they make no attempt to address the bill’s overwhelming and fundamental constitutional problems, instead assuming the conclusion by arguing that, since Indians have Indian tribes, therefore all “indigenous groups” should have an Indian tribe.
Actually, maybe this isn’t so surprising, since the constitutional objections to the bill are really unanswerable.
