With Obamacare to remain “the law of the land,” to use Speaker Boehner’s unfortunate term, businesses will now react in ways that are not good for employment opportunities to avoid the financial drain. A CEO of a company that owns New York area Applebee’s franchises has already stated that he will freeze hiring. From the Opposing Views story:
Businesses will seek to hire fewer full time employees and/or keep their workforce under fifty: Zane Tankel, CEO of Apple-Metro, which owns Applebee’s restaurants in the New York area, told Fox Business Network, today, that he will freeze hiring, stop building new restaurants and may fire employees in order to dodge the requirements of Obamacare (video below).
Obamacare requires a business, with 50 or more employees, to provide a health care plan by 2014, reports ThinkProgress.org. Tankel said: “We’ve calculated it will be some millions of dollars across our system. So what does that say, that says we won’t build more restaurants. We won’t hire more people, exactly the opposite of what the President says.”
Michele Malkin has noted that the orks are out in force spewing the usual hate, now a SOP tactic of the Left. But I think the big story here is that this is the start of what I call the “Great Chase.” Businesses will try to cut their losses by reducing employee hours or by keeping their workforce under 50. The technocrats will respond by changing the rules, say, by lowering the full-time employment requirement to 40 and/or reducing the number of hours worked that qualify as “full time employment.” Businesses will react again, and the government will respond. The chase will be on.
And don’t be surprised if someday a regulation is passed requiring employers to hire based on some bureaucratic profit/loss/gross income formula, since chronic unemployment caused by over regulation will be assigned to their “greed,” rather than onerous policies that stifle growth and the willingness of businesses to hire. Once you give technocrats control, it is never enough.
