Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, appeared this morning on ABC’s This Week. Host George Stepanopoulos asked him how he felt about General Petraeus’s not testifying as scheduled this coming week regarding the 9/11/12 attacks. Chambliss didn’t express any dissatisfaction with the situation at all, saying, “He and I have already had a conversation,” and explaining that “his very capable deputy,” Michael Morell, could stand in for Petraeus.
Many observers have questioned why Petraeus’s resignation over a personal matter would preclude him from providing crucial testimony about the events in Libya. Chambliss said “that’s certainly fine,” though he also explained that he “wouldn’t rule out” the idea of Petraeus appearing in front of the committee to testify about the matter in the future.
