At War: Afghanistan's Spy Chief Injured in Taliban Suicide Attack
Afghanistan’s intelligence chief Asadullah Khalid was injured in a “cowardly terrorist” attack in the Afghan capital Thursday, the country’s spy agency said.
Mr. Khalid, confirmed as head of the National Directorate of Security in September, was targeted inside one of the spy agency’s guesthouses in Kabul’s central Taimani neighborhood, according to witnesses. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the attack was a suicide bombing.
Mr. Khalid was hit in the lower part of the body and is unconscious in a hospital, a person familiar with the matter said. One of his bodyguards was killed in the attack, according to the person.
President Hamid Karzai said in a statement that he visited Mr. Khalid in the NDS hospital in Kabul. He said the spy chief is under surgery and his health is improving. . .
