South Carolina congressman Tim Scott was appointed yesterday to fill Jim DeMint’s Senate seat, and as news broke of Governor Nikki Haley’s announcement racially charged reactions from Twitter users began. A “token” is probably the most flattering name he was called.

Not only is Scott the state’s first black senator — and the South’s first since Reconstruction — but he will also serve as the only black senator in the upcoming Congress.
