Morning Joe Panel Admits ‘We Would Have Led With’ Harpootlian Story If He Were a Republican
This morning, the Morning Joe crew agreed that, if a Republican made comments similar to those South Carolina Democratic party chairman Dick Harpootlian recently made about the state’s Indian-American governor, the media would have slammed him.
Over the weekend at the state party’s annual dinner, Harpootlian said he wanted to “send Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from.”
“Let me just say, fair enough, that if a Republican did this, we’d be running it like crazy,” said co-host Mika Brzezinski after explaining Harpootlian’s remarks. “So we’re covering it, because it was wrong,” she explained.
“Oh, we would have led with it,” Mike Barnicle chimed in later in the conversation. Mark Halperin said he believed “[Harpootlian's] a good man but he has a history of making sloppy remarks.”
In 2012, Harpootlian said, after Haley led a press conference from a basement studio, that the governor was “down in the bunker à la Eva Braun,” and refused to apologize for the remark. Halperin predicted that, regarding this most recent remark, “I bet he says [sorry] today,” and Brzezinski agreed.
