Reacting to news that cemeteries in Cambridge and elsewhere have rejected the body of deceased Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the GOP nominee for Senate in Massachusetts, Gabriel Gomez, says Tsarnaev should be buried at sea. “To me, it’s simple,” he posted to his Twitter account, “He should be buried at sea with Bin Laden.”
Bureaucrats worried about where to bury Boston Marathon terrorist #1. To me, it’s simple: he should be buried at sea with Bin Laden.— Gabriel Gomez (@GomezForMA) May 6, 2013
Gomez, a former Navy SEAL, defeated two challengers in last week’s Republican primary and now faces Democratic representative Ed Markey in the race for the Senate seat vacated by longtime Massachusetts senator John Kerry.
Markey also addressed the issue of Tsarnaev’s burial place yesterday, telling reporters, “I think the people of Massachusetts have a right to say that they do not want that terrorist to be buried on the soil of Massachusetts.” He added that he personally does not want to see Tsarnaev buried in the state.
The latest polls have Gomez trailing Markey by single digits. Republicans are hopeful that, by fielding a strong candidate such as Gomez, they can pull off an upset in the notoriously liberal state akin to the 2010 election of Scott Brown, whose victory broke the Democrats’ supermajority in the Senate during President Obama’s first term.
