The American Civil Liberties Union has launched an online petition in the form of a wedding guest list in an effort to urge Modern Family’s producers to have the show’s gay couple tie the knot. Two of the show’s main characters are Mitchell Pritchett (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), a gay couple with an adopted daughter.
“Mitch and Cam are a couple that America has come to know and love, and seeing them get married, and seeing the characters in the story grapple with their desire to get married, makes it real for a bigger part of America,” said the ACLU’s director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Project. Supporters can go to ModernFamilyWedding.com to “RSVP” to the wedding. Ferguson tweeted his support for the petition:
Love this!Thank you ACLU! Maybe once Prop 8 is overturned! instagram.com/p/ZV9NMHQEp6/— Jesse Tyler Ferguson (@jessetyler) May 15, 2013
The Hollywood Reporter notes that the ACLU’s push comes after ”a wave of cancelations” of shows featuring a record number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender characters from this past season.
Modern Family was also among the shows targeted by an HHS public-relations campaign to get popular television shows to promote Obamacare. The sitcom did mention the president’s health-care program in a November episode, but the reference did not cast Obamacare in a good light.
