Ted Cruz turned the tables on John McCain as the two sparred on the Senate floor this morning, with Cruz willingly embracing the “wacko bird” epithet the Arizona senator hurled at him and other conservatives earlier this year.
Cruz objected to McCain’s call for a conference committee on the budget, which Cruz worries would lead to raising the debt ceiling. Yesterday, Cruz said “I don’t trust the Republicans” on the issue; today, he asserted that there are more Republican lawmakers who agree with him than McCain.
“It has been suggested that we are ‘wacko birds,’” Cruz said, referring to the name McCain gave him and others who supported Rand Paul’s filibuster against the president’s drone policy on American citizens. “Well, if that is the case, I will suggest to my friend from Arizona, there may be more wacko birds in the Senate than is suspected.”
