Senator John Cornyn (R., Texas) was one of 14 Senators who signed a letter Monday urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) to allow more votes on amendments to the immigration-reform bill. Only nine amendments have received roll-call votes in the Senate thus far, and it is within Reid’s power to close off debate on the bill and set up a vote on final passage before the end of the week.
Cornyn sharply criticized Reid’s handling of the bill. “The minority has rights, too,” he said. “Our side wants the right to choose our own amendments, not to have the majority leader choose which of our amendments he is going to deign to allow debate and votes on. That’s not democracy. That’s not the United States Senate. That’s a dictatorship.”
