Is the “freedom agenda” dead in the Middle East? It may not look too healthy right now, but don’t expect this issue to go away. Controversy over attempts to spread democracy far beyond our borders is written too deeply into the American experience to disappear for long.
Opposing sides on democratization policy often talk past one another. In an essay for The Claremont Review of Books, I try to join the issue by grappling with the work of Reuel Marc Gerecht, the best-informed and most thoughtful advocate of the policy of democracy promotion in the Middle East. The piece is called, “Theory of Evolution.”
