WH: 'President Drawing a Line' on No Debt-Limit Negotiations
White House press secretary Jay Carney said the president will not negotiate on raising the debt limit until the government is reopened. He argued that doing otherwise would set an “irresponsible” precedent between the legislative and executive branches in future negotiations.
“The president is drawing a line here,” Carney said at Thursday’s press briefing. “We cannot do it. He will not do it.”
“We’re talking about turning the full faith and credit of the United States into something that is an open question every year, every quarter — it could be every week,” he added.
The White House previously “drew a line” in regards to the United States’ policy for military intervention in Syria if the Assad regime used chemical weapons. The president’s steadfastness to that line came into question last month when the administration’s had a muddled response to the use of chemical weapons there in August.
