Senator John McCain charged that the effort to defund Obamacare was self-defeating because it drew attention away from the disastrous rollout of the law’s exchanges. “The fiasco of this rollout has been obscured by the internecine strife within the Republican party,” McCain said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.
Ted Cruz, one of the leaders of the defunding effort, blames Senate Republicans for abandoning their House colleagues and forcing them to accept a “lousy deal.” He is also warning GOP senators that they will face primary challenges for their failure to support his effort.
But McCain is standing his ground. He said of Cruz’s effort, “It was a fool’s errand to start with, it was never going to succeed.”
