I have been doing a lot of media on the Jahi McMath tragedy, the meaning of brain death, how Jahi’s circumstance differs from Terri Schiavo’s, and who should be responsible for the costs going forward.
Interest in the story seems pretty high, so I did an extended analysis in my First Things column about Jahi specifically, and the issue of brain death generally.
I have seen one sliver of a silver lining in all of this awfulness:
This is a horrible tragedy. But in all the outpouring of support for Jahi and her family, we see that in America human life still matters. That, at least, is worth celebrating. May God bless Jahi McMath.
